Fei-Fei Li, co-director of Stanford’s Human-Centered AI Institute, was among those who asked Biden on Tuesday to help create a “moonshot moment” for AI.
“That means using AI to help solve some of humanity’s most important questions and problems, such as curing cancer, helping the environment, education, improving health care, this is a technology that can help,” Li said.
Governor Newsom let Biden know that California was seeking “thoughtful regulation” of AI so that the industry — whose footprint in the state is growing — can expand safely and sustainably, said Newsom adviser Jason Elliott. “We are thankful the president is deeply engaged on this complex issue.”
Newsom was on a panel that also included Sal Khan, CEO of Khan Academy; Joy Buolamwini, founder of the Algorithmic Justice League; Tristan Harris, executive director and co-founder of the Center for Human Technology; Oren Etzioni, former CEO of the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence; and Jennifer Doudna, a professor of chemistry at UC Berkeley.
